From 21 to 23 September 2026, Shenzhen Upcera New Materials Co., Ltd. (UPCERA) travelled to Malaga, the coastal city in southern Spain, to attend ECOC 2026 — the European Conference on Optical Communication — as a professional visitor. The objective was clear: to take a close look at the latest developments and the direction of the European optical communications market.

Across the three days, what the team felt first was the distinctive warmth of a southern European city — the sun, the sea breeze and the oversized three-dimensional “#ECOC26” letters at the entrance, which together formed their most immediate impression of the show. More valuable than the atmosphere, however, were the conversations UPCERA struck up at the booths with a large number of high-quality optical communications companies from many different countries. Exchanging quite specific information on product specifications, delivery schedules and customisation capability, both sides arrived at a fuller and more rounded view of the demand and direction of the European optical communications market.

Looking at the exhibition from a broader perspective, the products in the spotlight — zirconia ceramic sleeves and non-standard ferrules — correspond closely to UPCERA’s core product range. Both are indispensable parts of the optical connectivity link: demand is stable over the long term, and the barriers to entry lie in material consistency and precision machining, which is exactly where UPCERA’s two decades of accumulated expertise sit. At the same time, downstream and derived products such as finished connectors, adapters and blue zirconia assemblies also showed clear purchasing demand, which gives UPCERA a sound market basis for extending its offer from single components to assembly-level supply.

There was also a noteworthy episode on site. The UPCERA team met again at ECOC with a Czech customer with whom they had held initial business talks in Shenzhen at CIOE in early September. Meeting once more abroad, the two sides promptly arranged deeper and more substantive product discussions, advancing a first contact made only half a month earlier straight to the level of concrete proposals. This detail confirms from another angle that CIOE and ECOC both carry considerable influence and reach in the global optical communications industry — one anchored in Asia, the other radiating across Europe, together forming the two poles of industry exchange.

After these three days, the conclusion was equally clear: the rapid expansion of AI data centres worldwide is injecting sustained vitality and business potential into the European optical communications market. The build-out of computing infrastructure travels all the way from optical modules and connectors upstream to precision ceramic components, which means what UPCERA saw was not merely the buzz on the show floor, but a longer-term growth curve.

For UPCERA, this trip to Malaga was both a market study and a recalibration of perspective. Looking ahead to the next stage, the company will keep its focus on the products the optical communications industry cannot do without — zirconia ceramic sleeves, non-standard ferrules and the like — continue to track real demand in Europe, and turn the material consistency and precision machining capability it has built up in precision ceramics into more tangible delivery value for its customers. Starting from Malaga, UPCERA’s ties with European customers are deepening step by step.

About UPCERA

Founded in 2003, Shenzhen Upcera is the first company in China to independently develop zirconia ceramic sleeves for optical communication. It has long focused on the R&D and manufacture of precision structural ceramics in zirconia (ZrO₂) and alumina (Al₂O₃). Its main products include φ2.5 / φ1.25 mm ceramic sleeves (split sleeves), non-standard ferrules, precision ceramic structural parts, zirconia rods and jewel components, and it serves customers worldwide in optical communications, aerospace, rail transit and medical sectors on a direct-from-manufacturer basis.
